Lahontan Valley Choir spring concert May 9

The Lahontan Valley Concert Choir will host “It’s 5 o’ clock Somewhere,” a tribute to Jimmy Buffet at 7 p.m. on Thursday, May 9 at the Churchill County High School Theater.

Green Goddess Farmers Market

The Green Goddess Farmers Market & Seedling Sale is May 5 from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. at Oats Park Art Center.

There will be bounce houses from Magical Party Rentals, face painting and glitter tattoos from Desert Rose Tattoo, a petting zoo put on by CCHS FFA, and many spring crafts and activities provided by the Churchill County Museum and Churchill County Parks and Recreation.

Kim's Kool Treats, One Bite at a Time, Retro Brew Coffee Co, Deep Roots Bake Co, and La Mère Breads & Bakes will have treats . If your kids are into relaxation, they can stop by the Purposeful Living Healing Center and Sound Vibing Soul Sisters booths for a quick sound session. Oh, and of course, there are many seedlings to check out for those budding gardeners.

"Upscale southern comfort food with a sophisticated touch," is how Chef Shane of Big Blue Q of Tahoe describes his food. His truck features his Sierra Style BBQ and a rotating menu of specialty bites.

Workman Farms has been a Fallon staple since 1964. Originally, it was a farm stand that expanded to a nursery and quilting shop. They will be at the Green Goddess Farmers Market filling up two booth spaces with goodies from their farm store — perennials, starts, seeds, berries and many other types of plants as well as handmade goods – quilts, aprons, purses and more.

Fire department street dance

On May 10 from 5-9 p.m. on Carson Street in front of the firehouse, the Fallon Churchill Volunteer Fire Department will celebrate its third annual street dance.

The event is a way for the fire department to showcase some goodwill in our community and provide an evening of entertainment and games for all to enjoy.

Attendance to the event is free and the city of Fallon is donating all of the food and soda/water for the event. Highlights include fire truck rides, a federal fire smoke trailer demonstration, free ice cream, free tri-tip sandwiches and hot dogs, free soda or water, no host bar, disc jockey and dancing, raffle items and cornhole games.

Democratic Sawyer-Bryan annual dinner

The Churchill County Democrats’ annual Sawyer-Bryan Dinner and fundraiser will be held May 10 at the Fallon Convention Center.

Doors open at 6 p.m. and the dinner and program begin at 7 p.m. Dinner will be catered by Wildhorse Cafe. Nevada State Assembly Speaker Steven Yeager will be this year’s keynote speaker. There will also be a raffle and silent auction.

Greenwave Hall of Fame nominations

Nominations are being accepted until May 31 for the Greenwave Hall of Fame Class of 2024.

Categories include teams, athletes, coaches and supporters of Greenwave athletics. A gathering of the present and former inductees, former athletes and the community is planned for Sept. 26 with the introduction of the Class of 2024 scheduled before kickoff of the varsity football game between Truckee and Fallon. The banquet is Sept. 28 at the Fallon Convention Center.

New museum hours

The Churchill County Museum is now open 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday-Saturday and 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Sundays.

Pennington Life Center

Cards, crafts, exercise, games, discussion on voting, welfare representative available to answer questions, Medicare representative and computer assistance are just a few of the activities and resources available at the Pennington Life Center in May.

Plenty of good eats at the Pennington Life Center: All are welcome to partake. Lunch served 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. weekdays. Cost is $6 for those under age 60 and a suggested donation of $3 for those 60 and older.

See what the Churchill County Library offers in May and dive into a variety of free events and programming for kids and adults.

Special events:

• Living with Fire – Celebrating Smokey the Bear’s 80th birthday during Nevada Wildfire Awareness Month with two events to help you become more familiar with how to prevent and prepare for wildfires.

Led by the UNR Extension’s Living with Fire program, the first session May 3 at 1:30 p.m., will include activities geared toward getting ready for evacuation and making communities more wildfire ready.

The second program May 17 at 1:30 p.m. will focus on how wildfires spread and how to prepare homes to be safer during a wildfire. Programming gear toward upper elementary and middle school students. Come to one or both programs!

• Sen. Jacky Rosen’s office representative will be at the library on May 9 at 1 p.m. for “office hours.”

• Reading with Rover also takes place on May 9 from 3:30 to 4:30 p.m. Children read books to dogs to improve their reading skills and confidence to a decidedly captive audience. Added bonus: keep the books! Another bonus: our furry friends are great listeners!

• Looking for work? Let EmployNV help you with aspects of finding a new job May 2 and 16 at 2 p.m. at the library.

• Book discussion group for adults continues on May 23 at 6 p.m. in the library annex. This month’s topic is “mental health.” Bring your favorite read on this topic to discuss and share with others. Light refreshments served.

• Looking ahead to June, the Summer Reading Program kicks off on June 1 at 10 a.m. with an event featuring police, construction and fire vehicles up close. The program runs through July 31.

Mother’s Day train rides

The V&T Railway Commission will host train rides over Mother’s Day weekend May 11-12.

Guests will rediscover Nevada’s rich history in mining and mills on the V&T Carson City-Virginia City route meandering through tunnels, canyons and mining towns aboard a restored 1914 Pullman coach led by a 1916 Baldwin 2-8-0 steam locomotive.

Departing from Carson City’s Eastgate Depot, the 24-mile round trip tour includes a 3.5-hour stopover in Virginia City, where guests can stroll the boardwalks and explore restaurants, shops, saloons, museums, mines and more.

Complimentary coffee, mimosas and pastries will be served. Additionally, each mom will receive a gift. Cost for adults (ages 16 and up) is $65, and children (ages 2-15) $45. Infants 24 months and under ride free when sitting on a parent's lap.

USDA funding

Funding is available from USDA Rural Development Nevada for nonprofits, tribes, colleges and universities to create revolving loan fund programs and support training and technical assistance for rural microentrepreneurs and microenterprises.
